internet landscape

Internet Landscape is my first project on the net.
It is a project of photo reportage from the world of the Net, since 2003.
Everything started with this Manifesto.
This is the original version  of the “Net Photography Manifesto”,  the first theoretical reflection on net photography.

Net Photography Manifesto

Marco Cadioli 2003

Internet is a place. A chance of another possible reality. A developing and growing place turning into a urban space. It is increasing and moving boundary.Internet is not just a bad time market.
It is a place we spend a lot of our time life.

Taking pictures from the net, it means take a look at its phenomenology.
It means an open-minded approach beyond any theory.
It means looking to this slice of reality and turn it into eternity.
It means seizing this process while still increasing. When places can come out from nowhere, born just from ideas and softwares. And nowhere is the place they are going to.

These moving landscapes must be studied.
They deserve to be talked about because it is worth history.
It is necessary to travel across this land to catch it.

Internet Landscape introduces the trip’s reportages.

Inside the net it is time to stop the present. In order to take it from its flow and watch it the way it is. To do that, we are using machines’ memories.
When a site disappears, it is forever. Nothing remains of its former life, neither do ruins.
Pictures can give back its presence the way it “has been”.

Significant and beautiful places belong to the net. They need to be observed to understand that a new reality is coming on: such of data bases using space representations. As Miltos Manetas says in
Websites, the art of our times “Taking snapshots of web pages is observing how those entities behave and it is also searching for a new kind of beauty”

These are reportages from the limits, where people who try and create stand, where you can find exhibitions and unusual places.
Every web site defines an entire world of rules, set up by someone who decided to. There you will find placement, building, and architecture.
Every web site runs along computer rules as the outside world runs along physics’. Every web site gets along software rules as its own rules.

Objects you’ll meet here behave and relate their own way. They are elements of a growing landscape. Every designer is now contributing to their history.

The shots in here are from the net. The Cut &Paste operation is legitimate in the new media, and, as Lev Manovich says, it belongs to digital logic.
These pictures are the natural outcome from a world of data. The digital code is the one we have chosen to represent Reality.

Reflections about net photography (Marco Cadioli 2013)

Reportages
I travel across the net like a Japanese tourist in Europe. I jump from a place to another.
I travel across the net like I was a reporter to tell about place made by images.
“Essentially the camera makes everyone a tourist in other people’s reality, and eventually in one’s own.” (Susan Sontag “On Photography”)

Space
I’ll show the way to that place, I’ll give the references about its physical existence. Things in the net have precise addresses.
“Synthetic computer generated imagery is not an inferior representation of our reality, but a realistic representation of a different reality” (Lev Manovich -The language of new media , 2001)

Data base
I’ll take pictures of data bases interfaces which use space representations. I get into the representations game, and I take it seriously.
“… defining navigation method through spatialized representation (of multimedia data base)”
(Lev Manovich -The language of new media , 2001)

Travel Agency
Sometimes, when I guide people through the net, I feel like a tour operator. And this (project, ndt) reminds me of a travel agency catalogue.
I show the places and I give links. You can skip directly into the place you like the most, you can leave and go yourself.
“Because Internet is not just another “media”, as the Old media advertises, but it is a space, similar to the American Continent immediately after it has been discovered, anything that can be found on the web, has a physical presence: it occupies real estate”. (Miltos Manetas, Websites, the art of our times) “

Pictures
I am using a software whose icon is a camera. I can capture screen slices. They are web page snapshots. The Cut&Paste operation is allowed in the new media, it is the natural development of photography into digital spaces.
Do they belong to me? They do the way it does the house and the mountain I’m taking picture of .
“To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed” (Susan Sontag “On Photography”)

Frames
I choose reality slices in squared shape. I move the selection.
I decide format, dimension, poit of view, I can zoom.
And I take the shot.

Adherence to the reference
They are the most real pictures you can take. They have the most possible adherence to the reference. They are real emanations of the object, its footprint.
There is no transposition.
There isn’t any chemical and optical process cause they are digital images into a digital world. They are a perfect copy of a reality slice during a single instant. And it couldn’t be different.
“The photograph is literally an emanation of the referent.” (Roland Barthes – La chambre claire. Note sur la photographie -1980)

Has been
They say what you see it is what “has been” What you can see it is a frame of what is happening on the screen during a given moment.
And that screen is a window on the net.
” What I see has been here, in this place which extends between infinity and the subject (operator or spectator); it has been here, and yet immediately separated; it has been absolutely, irrefutably present, and yet already deferred.” (Barthes, – ibid.)

Time
I tell the date and moment of the shots. And it is the time of the fuso of where I am. Here in Milan. Where those things happened.
Maybe they will appear the same way to a new traveller, as they were pyramid, or they can simply disappear, as net memories. Time will give the net a new life. Time will make the net flows into the river of the events.
“The decisive moment” (Cartier Bresson – 1952)

Not even ruins
Sites disappear in a so definitive way they could not do outside. Neither ruins remain, nor any sign of a presence.

Net Photography Manifesto
Marco Cadioli 2003

Come dice Miltos Manetas in Websites, the art of our times “Taking snapshots of webpages is observing how those entities behave and it is also searching for a new kind of beauty”

(Susan Sontag – On photography – 1973)
Spazi
“Synthetic computer generated imagery is not an inferior representation of our reality, but a realistic representation of a different reality” (Lev Manovich -The language of new media , 2001)

Data base
“… defining navigation method through spatialized representation (of multimedia data base)” (Lev Manovich )

Interactive experiences

(Roland Barthes – La chambre claire. Note sur la photographie -1980)
